Home for the Weekend
What do you think of when you think of home? We asked this question to the dozen attendees at our first-ever Home for the Weekend Retreat in Kansas City recently. Some words that came to mind were: restful, relaxed, cozy, authentic, where I am known and loved, sweatpants!, safe, laughter, security… and the list went on and on. Geoff added (of course), “Where you can walk out to the refrigerator at 2AM to get a glass of milk in your underwear and it doesn’t matter!” Home is where you are your truest self, completely known and accepted. At least, that’s what it can be.
In John 1:34-35 we read that a couple of guys were following Jesus at “a short distance” when Jesus noticed them. He asked them, “What do you want?” They asked in return, “Where are you staying?” What Jesus said next reverberates through the centuries right down to us today.
“Come and see for yourselves.”
The word for “staying” in their question means “to abide, to dwell, to live” and is also the word Jesus used in John 15:4 when describing the relationship He was inviting us into. He explained that just as He was abiding in the Father, we the branches were to abide in Jesus the vine. “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in Me and I am in you.” (John 14:20) Abiding means Home. Where we live and belong. Where we are most ourselves, known and loved, received by the One Who knows us best and loves us most. There’s so much for us to explore and discover about the heart of God for us and His Good News. Jesus showed us what it looked like to have a connected, abiding relationship with our Father. When we abide in Him, we can know the same relationship. We are truly Home in Him.
“Make yourselves at home in my love.”
(John 15:9, Msg)
In Home for the Weekend Retreats, we dive into what we believe is an invitation to us from the heart of God into Home as He has defined it – a place in His heart where we can live freely – completely known, deeply loved, and truly safe in His care. This two-day retreat, set in the living room with a small group of trusted friends, offers time and space to steep in the reality of finding Home in Him. Through worship, prayer, Reflection on the Word of God, sharing home-cooked meals, foot-washing, Communion, and several written and artistic prompts, attendees are led through a process of discovering home for themselves in the Father’s heart, learning how He wants to personally engage them.
In Their Own Words (Reflections from HFTW attendees)
“When you started talking about the difference between ‘house’ and ‘home’ – like the ‘house of God’ versus actually finding home in His heart – it was like a punch in the gut. How vastly different those two things are. And then it hit me…’Of course! That’s really the WHOLE POINT!!’”
(HFTW Attendee)
“Throughout the weekend, I found myself looking at the white board with all of our brainstormed ideas describing home and I kept thinking to myself, ‘Is there really a place like this? It sounds like a Disney movie. Does God really want to be home for me like that?’”

Tools for Walking in Freedom Meetings
Sunday evenings from 5 – 7pm
Sunday evenings from 5 – 7pm
If you are in the NW Ohio region, please join us this Sunday evening from 5 – 7pm for our next Tools for Walking in Freedom meeting. We’ll be exploring the topics listed below according depending on the week. We’ll have a time of worship and teaching. The rest of our time will be spent practicing this week’s tool and then availability for prayer and/or further personal reflection time. We are really looking forward to it. Hope to see you there!
Archbold Evan Church:
709 Fayette Street, Archbold, Ohio 43502
After having completed the Steps to Freedom in Christ booklet as individuals, the Tools for Walking in Freedom meetings will provide practical tools for walking out our newfound freedom in Christ as well as ways to continually allow God to set us free in our daily lives.
The overarching theme for these evenings comes from Mark 4 and the parable of the Sower and the Seed. We want to learn to practice several “Holy Spirit gardening tools” taken from the Word of God to aid us in cultivating “good soil” in our hearts.
February 27 – In the Stillness
Our lives are busy, our minds are full. We know how to “do” but often we don’t know how to “be”. Psalm 46:10 beckons us to “Be still and know that He is God” and in Psalm 23, David writes “You make me lie down in green pastures, You lead me beside still waters.” Stillness is a very important tool for positioning our hearts to receive all that God wants to do in us. It is in the stillness that we can hear Him speak. True freedom comes into our lives as we respond to God’s personal word to us. We will practice quieting our hearts in stillness with a deep desire to hear Him speak.
March 6 – Listening for God’s Voice
Once we have stilled and quieted our souls, we are able to hear much more clearly what God is speaking to us. In I Kings 19, God spoke to Elijah in a “still small voice”. He is still speaking into the quiet of our hearts today. We’ll explore Jesus’ parable of the Shepherd and the Sheep in John 10 and note the deeply personal ways God communicates His heart to us when we have ears to hear. Listening with our spiritual ears for His still small voice is a huge part of cultivating the good soil of our hearts. We’ll practice listening for His Voice as a passage from God’s Word is read over us through a tool called Reflection on the Word.
March 13 – Instead: The Great Exchange
The enemy has a way of piggybacking on our pain to create believable lies about ourselves, about God, about other people, about our circumstances. These lies, when agreed with, become areas of bondage in our lives. Like the weeds in the parable of the Sower and the Seed in Mark 4, these lies begin to choke out the good seed of truth in our hearts. So how do we identify the lies we’ve been believing, often for a very long time? On our own, we have no capacity for getting to the depths of our hearts. We need help. What a wonderful promise is found in Jeremiah 17:9-10: “The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out. But I, God, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.” We can ask the Holy Spirit for help in seeing our hearts clearly. Taken from Isaiah 61:1-3 and Luke 4:16-21, we’ll practice a tool of honesty that helps us exchange lies for truth: God’s Great Instead!
March 20 – No Meeting this week
March 27 – Forgiveness from the Heart
When asked by Peter how many times he had to forgive his brother who kept offending him, Jesus answered by telling the parable of the unmerciful servant, found in Matthew 18:21-35. He concludes His story with an appeal to “release forgiveness from your heart”. How is that done? Is it even possible? Through a tool called The Forgiveness Tool, we want to practice first acknowledging and then offering the depths of our pain to God. He enters into our suffering with us and brings comfort to the deepest places of woundedness in our hearts. The overflow of His comfort to our own hearts is the ability to truly forgive those who have hurt us and even join Jesus in praying blessing over them.
April 3 – Loved People Love People
What did Jesus mean when He said He was giving us a “new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34) It sounds pretty much like the summary of the Law and the Prophets, doesn’t it? “Love God. Love people.” How was Jesus’ new command new? We believe the newness is found in the simple words “as I have loved you”. From the moment Jesus arrived on planet earth, He began to show us firsthand His Father’s heart of love for us. Are we experiencing this love? We can believe by faith that He loves us but are we experiencing Him loving us right now, in this very moment? Paul prayed in Ephesians 3 that “being rooted and grounded in love, we would have power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and that we would know this love that surpasses knowledge…” Abiding in the reality of Him loving us results in fresh fruit bursting forth from our lives. Loved people cannot help but love people!! We will practice loving other people as we let Him truly love us through the “Living Loved” tool.

Asia Outreach – Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand
March 2 – April 27, 2023
March 2 – April 27, 2023
No matter where we go in the world,
people are searching for a way Home.
Our Full Sail team will be in Cambodia (March) and Thailand (April) and we can’t wait! We will be working with our missionary friends to share the love of Jesus with the beautiful people in each country and also take some time to provide retreat for those work so tirelessly “on the ground”. (See our schedule below)
Carrying Home
Jesus said, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
(Matthew 11:28 – 30 Msg)
After spending over four decades in full-time ministry we understand the importance of finding ways to learn “the unforced rhythms of grace” Jesus was talking about. We believe there indeed are ways of living full and healthy lives with deeply connected relationships grounded in honestly, vulnerability, courage and love. Jesus was our example in this. It’s how He lived His life – abiding in His Father’s love. He went away to rest, walked slowly through the crowd, told stories to His friends about what their Father was really like, what they meant to Him, and His sweet plan to bring them… Home. We want to accept our Father’s invitation to come Home. Home to the place prepared for us in His great heart.
We are answering His invitation to rest by humbling ourselves before Him and asking for His help. He said He was the Way. So we’re trusting Him to show us His Way. Our way, the old path, was very long, and the load we carried was so very heavy for us little ones.
We want to listen. Only doing what we see Him doing. Only saying what we hear Him saying. We are merely learning, but while uncovering this for ourselves, we feel compelled to invite others to join us in the journey. So, while with the sweet Khmer of Cambodia or the smiling Thai’s, we’ll explore this love in the Home of His heart. And maybe offer a cup of cold water to a friend whose labor has made their heart weary.
Lord, through all the generations
you have been our home!
Before the mountains were born,
before you gave birth to the earth and the world,
from beginning to end, you are God.
(Psalm 90:1-2 NLT)

of the ministry of Diaconia. Diaconia is a ministry to women in and around Asuncion.
In December, Marilyn Gross, a friend from Washington approached Jill about the possibilities of making a scouting trip to Asuncion, Paraguay. Marilyn has been to a Current for Women weekend and a couple of church retreats Jill has spoken at. Marilyn knows Jill, knows her heart. She was keen on connecting Jill with her friend Adela Braun, director of a non-profit women’s ministry in Asuncion called Diaconia (Deacon). Marilyn felt impressed to connect Jill with Adela, believing that they were kindred spirits and that God may be opening a door for a future FSM ministry opportunity.
The heart behind Diaconia is three-fold: to provide microloans for women in poverty in Paraguay, to provide courses in vocational trades and financial management, and to provide personal encouragement through the Word of God and the spiritual companionship of chaplains in Diaconia Trust Groups. Currently there are 60+ women chaplains who oversee 3000+ women. (For more information, visit http://www.diaconia.com.py/wwd.html)
A Skype call with Marilyn, Adela and Jill confirmed Marilyn’s suspicions!! They clicked immediately!! Adela is fun and free and passionate and visionary and she was very excited about the possibility of a visit from us.
With that in mind, a team of four, including Jill, Marilyn, Jill’s sister Jamie, our good friend Lori, will journey to Asuncion, Paraguay, October 6-14. Our goal is to get to know Adela and her leadership team and to see firsthand what Diaconia is all about, to take some time to pour into the chaplains who give so much of their time and energy to the “flock” of women under their care, and then listen to the Holy Spirit as to any partnership He may be initiating for future FSM outreach there.
